Police, DEA and Wegmans team up for ‘National Take Back Day’

Newark Village Police Officer Greg DeBoerdere will be in at least 12 different places at the same time on Saturday, April 28th. No, it is not science fiction, it is all part of the ‘National Take Back Day’, a nationwide initiative being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to reduce issues related to prescription drugs.

Local Police agencies will be on site at various locations throughout the County for anyone who has any outdated, unused, expired prescriptions they wish to dispose of. People will be able to simply drive up to one of the locations and leave the drugs in a drop-off box, no questions asked.

The idea for using a life size cut out to mark the locations was the brainchild of Newark Police Chief David Christler, who saw a similar DEA display poster and expanded upon the idea with the stand-up cardboard cut-out.

Officer DeBoerdere was chosen basically because he fit the profile of a police officer. He has since garnered the nickname “Cardboard Greg” and even had the first of the stand-up displays damaged by vandals within a hour of placement at the Walmart in Newark. (see page 15)

Wegman’s answered the call when Chief Christler was looking for a way to fulfill his cardboard dreams and donated the dozen “Cardboard Gregs”.

The drop-offs are being established to encourage unused, or expired prescription drugs from ending up in the water supplies by persons flushing them for disposal, or by having them fall in to the hands of drug addicts.

Drop off centers will be open on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the following locations:

• Clyde Police Department, Galens Express Lane Pharmacy, 17 Sodus Street in Clyde.
• Macedon Police Department, Town Hall, 1620 Wayneport Road in Macedon
• New York State Police (Williamson Barracks) 3957 Route 104 in Williamson Newark Police Department, Wegman’s Plaza 800 West Miller Street in Newark
• Sodus Police Department, Police Station, 39 Gaylord Street in Sodus.
• Palmyra Police Department, Palmyra Police Department 144 East Main Street in Palmyra.
• Lyons Police Department, Loson’s Big M Market, 33 Forgham Street in Lyons.
• Wayne County Sheriff’s Office (Ontario substation) 1846 Ridge Road in the Town of Ontario.
• Wolcott Police Department, Wolcott Police Department 6015 New Hartford Street in the Village of Wolcott.
