Sound the Trumpets
When it comes to watching network TV, I’ve always been an NBC guy. For my morning show, my evening news and even late night, NBC just always seemed like the “best” to me. Whether that’s true or not is likely up to personal preference rather than detailed Nielson ratings and the like.
However, there is one area where I like to deviate from the good old peacock. That’s Sunday Morning. CBS Sunday Morning to be more specific.
Ever since I can remember, CBS Sunday morning was always an enjoyable way to ease into the end of the weekend.
From the well known sound of the Sunday Morning theme song, to the way every segment, regardless of topic, was well done. Not a quick blip on the screen, or a scrolling headline, but usually a more in depth piece that gave you a look at the stories not covered elsewhere.
That’s becuase the stories about a soap box derby or a grandma claiming to have the best pie in America just don’t fit into a primetime newscast. However it doesn’t mean they still aren’t interesting stories. Combine those fun pieces with profiles on interesting people from around the country, unique coverage of top stories and the nature video clips at the end of each show. For me, it all adds up to one quality program.
One of the best things about the show is that it’s changed very little in my time. Besides the switch from Charles Kuralt to Charles Osgood in the 90’s, the show has maintained its format and integrity, a difficult task these days.
I mentioned the show the other day to a friend. He laughed and said “that show is for old people”. I couldn’t argue as I feel like the entire CBS network is for old people, however I came across an interesting little tidbit recently.
Despite the program appealing primarily to senior citizens, the show actually placed number one in its time slot in the 25–54 demographic. Looks like I’m not alone.
I wonder if those same people watch “Matlock” and “Murder She Wrote” too? Maybe I’m just an old man trapped in a young man’s body as I’ve always assumed. I have noticed my tolerance for young people, loud noises and is getting thinner every day… is that a sign?
